Libertad coins are Mexican bullion gold coins first introduced in 1991. They were minted in 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy ounce (ozt) weights. The Libertad coins are made of .999 fine pure gold. When the Libertad gold series were first introduced in 1991 their design was based on the 1921 Centenario gold coin or 50 peso gold coin. On the reverse side of the coin is a winged Victoria of Mexican Independence Victory Column in front of a landscape with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl rising in the background. The observe side shows the coat of arms of Mexico. They were minted in this design from 1991 to 1994. There were no Libertad coins minted from 1995 to 1999.
